Students: CAFNR Connections Success Tips
Once you have found one person or several people with whom you would like to correspond, the following tips should be helpful:
- Although the participants have volunteered because they genuinely want to help you, they have extremely busy lives. Respect their time. Always ask if it is convenient for them to correspond.
- Be prepared when you initiate a conversation with a mentor. Have a list of questions to ask.
- Share some information about yourself. Share what you enjoy classes, activities and hobbies. People can be more helpful to you if they have an idea of your goals.
- You may have a college experience in common with many of the volunteers on the database. Don't hesitate to ask about college experiences.
- Realize that professionals have an extensive network. Use this network if it is offered to you. Attend the breakfast meeting if you are invited. Ask if colleagues would be willing to share information about their career paths.
- Don't expect a job! Although occasionally students do receive job offers as a result of their participation, this is not the purpose of the program.
- Thank the volunteers. Send a thank-you note. Your appreciation is the best return on the investment of time and energy these people will receive. It means much more than the thank you they will receive from Career Services.
- Keep in touch. Send an occasional e-mail to keep those who have helped you informed.
