Inside Columbia Magazine's
Wine & Food Festival
June 25-29, 2008
Participation in the Columbia Wine and Food Festival will give Missouri residents and the University community a unique and tasty opportunity to sample the research, education and service that CAFNR provides to food science and agriculture, particularly through the Institute for Continental Climate Viticulture and Enology (ICCVE).
This institute is dedicated to coordinating research for grape and wine production in the midwest region of the U.S.
Missouri wines are making a comeback and are winning national and international awards.
ICCVE provides area growers and producers solid research data and advice to help grow the $21 billion in retail sales that Missouri enjoyed in 2003 as well as preparing a new generation of students to enter this field.
CAFNR's Food Science department now offers an emphasis in enology.
Enology is the science and business of wine production. Missouri's wine industry has grown from 50 to more than 70 wineries over the past five years. The local wine industry employs almost 6,200 people and generates an estimated $70 million in federal, state and local tax revenue.
