South Africa
The semester study abroad program at the University of Pretoria offers an amazing opportunity for you to gain a personal knowledge of a country that has dramatically changed in the past 15 years.
In 1994, democratic elections were held ending the Apartheid era. The University of Pretoria has transformed after the end of apartheid from a predominately white, Afrikaans university to a national university available to all South Africans.
It has students from more than 60 countries. Academically, students can take advantage of a wide selection of courses in the Faculty (College) of Natural and Agricultural Sciences as well as other departments.
Location
The University of Pretoria is located in the city of Pretoria (also known as Tshwane) about 31 miles north of Johannesburg.
It is a large city with 1.8 million people. The main University of Pretoria campus is located in Hatfield, a suburb of Pretoria.
Hatfield has everything for students from cafes and restaurants to malls and grocery stores.
The weather in Pretoria averages from 60 to 85 degrees throughout the year. It is important to remember that since South Africa is in the southern hemisphere, their seasons are the opposite of ours; their winter is our summer and their summer is our winter.
Courses
Students can earn up to 15 credits upon successfully completing the program. Students are required to enroll in at least 12 credits.
Before departing for South Africa students work with their academic advisers to determine the MU course equivalencies they will receive for the courses they will take at UP. Students can take courses in all faculties (departments) offered at the University of Pretoria.
Requirements
- 2.75 GPA
- Good academic standing.
- Sophomore, Junior or Senior standing.
- Open to all MU students.
Accommodations
Mizzou students live in UP international student houses located next to campus.
Students normally have their own room, but in some cases may share a bedroom.
Houses have a kitchen, a living area and bathrooms. Normally these houses are shared with other international students.
