Germany
Overview
(Please note, this program will not run in 2009.)
Experience German culture and learn about unique German foods and beverages and their production methods in CAFNR's two-week summer study abroad program in Germany!
Students will gain first-hand knowledge of German meat and dairy industries from small facilities that have maintained their ethnic individuality to conglomerate-level facilities.
While Germany is probably most famous for the Autobahn and lack of speed limits, German food has a reputation of its own. This study abroad experience will take students throughout Germany, from Kiel (Schleswig-Holstein/Baltic Sea) in the North to Kulmbach (Bavaria) in the South, to visit small Artisan cheese and sausage makers as well as large mass-production facilities.
Other places that students will visit include the Hermann Memorial (Hermann, Mo. is named after him), the Worms' cathedral, an open-air museum of Germany in the middle ages, the Volkswagen Autostadt, a huge ships' lock, museums dedicated to cheese, ham, bread, beer and schnapps, as well as the Pied Piper of Hamlin and several castles.
Location
With a population of slightly over 82 million people and an area of 137,826 square miles, Germany is a country that is only about twice the size of Missouri (68,898 square miles), but with a much higher population density (approximately 595 vs. 84 persons per square mile).
Accommodation
Students will stay in hostels and may share a room with one other student or perhaps four or more other students. Continental breakfasts will be provided in the hostels.
Academics
Students earn three credits in either animal science or food science, which will fulfill program requirements. Prior to departure, students will meet once a week in two-hour blocks in the evening to study German culture and language as well as receive an introduction to meat and dairy foods. Assignments, such as journaling, cultural observations and projects will be used to assess students' performance.
While the trip to Germany will focus on German foods, specifically meat and dairy products, German culture and its heritage in the U.S. will be discussed as well. In addition to the two weeks in Germany, the course will include an additional week in the U.S., with instruction and excursions to selected Missouri meat and dairy producers.
Funding Study Abroad
CAFNR scholarships and loans are available for this program. Students may also use Financial Aid and University Scholarships for study abroad.
